Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five – The Message (1982), 2xLP, Reissue

Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five – The Message (1982), 2xLP, Reissue

The debut studio album of American hip hop group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, originally released in October 1982 on Sugar Hill Records and featuring arguably the most influential hip-hop single of all time in “The Message”, together with “Scorpio” – one of the greatest electro recordings ever produced.

A gritty, plain-spoken and vividly cinematic portrait of black street life in New York circa ‘82 and a fascinating time capsule of rap’s early attempts with the album format – this album earned respect on its own terms.

Out of print for many years, we are very pleased to make this iconic and revered hip-hop album available again for fans old and new to enjoy.

Declaime & Madlib – In The Beginning (Vol. 3) (2023), LP

Declaime & Madlib – In The Beginning (Vol. 3) (2023), LP

In the Beginning (Vol. 3) continues the treasure trove of the early works of Declaime & Madlib, the longtime collaborators who helped usher in a new sound and style from the city of Oxnard, Calif. This collection is brimming with previously unheard tracks from this beyond-creative duo that blends hip-hop with funk, jazz, soul, and psychedelia to lay the groundwork for so many other emcees and producers.

For Declaime (a/k/a Dudley Perkins), this series serves as a way to honor his friends and the city that raised them. He shouts out names like The Almighty Metaphor (aka MED), Oh No the Disrupt, DJ Romes, Kazi, and more, who he says “created a lane for the city of Oxnard to get the recognition it deserves.” Some of them make an appearance in one form or another on this collection, too—Romes, for example, mastered the project—that compiles 10 previously lost tracks that were recorded from 1993 to ‘96.

R.A. The Rugged Man – Die, Rugged Man, Die (2005), 2xLP, Reissue

When R.A. The Rugged Man dropped his first album, it seemed like he’d been around for years…and, well, he had. The Rugged Man’s storied background includes early 90s collaborations with legends like Mobb Deep and The Notorious B.I.G., plus a few epic appearances on the seminal “Soundbombing” compilations. But until this 2004 masterpiece, he had never released a proper album. Thankfully, R.A. delivered “Die, Rugged Man, Die”, a defiant opus that kick-started his journey from industry outcast to independent hip-hop icon. Featuring the classic single “Chains”, “Die, Rugged Man, Die” proved R.A. could deliver on a full-length album, and remains an impressive body of work. Now, the previously out-of-print collection is available again on vinyl, complete with new updated artwork. Despite the efforts of doubters, R.A. The Rugged Man lives.

Sean Price & Small Professor – 86 Witness (2022), 2xLP, Reissue, Deluxe Edition, Gatefold

Coalmine Records, in partnership with Duck Down Music, is excited to announce the upcoming release of the deluxe edition of Sean Price & Small Professor’s collaborative classic, 86 Witness. Released as a limited edition gatefold 2XLP with both the main and instrumental versions, the album boasts several packaging accoutrements that involve an artwork overhaul designed with metallic inks. For those unfamiliar with 86 Witness, the album is a testament to both Hip-Hop’s Golden Era and the unbelievable talents of Sean Price, one of the genre’s biggest and best voices who was taken from us far, far too soon. His hilarious, tack-sharp rhymes are complemented by the imaginative and dusty production of Small Pro, who may just be rap’s best kept secret. Like his previous projects, 86 Witness is brimming with classic lines and lyrical barbs from P. What’s different here, however, is the depth of his references in addition to his incredible chemistry with Small Pro. From the verses to the beats, they have provided so many musical Easter eggs that each listen tips off something you’ve yet to discover. And that’s not even mentioning the ambitious lineup of guests featuring Your Old Droog, Guilty Simpson, Rockness Monsta, Elucid, Castel, Reef the Lost Cauze, Curly Castro, Zilla Rocca, and more.

Group Gome – Livin’ Proof (1995), 2xLP, Reissue

Group Gome – Livin’ Proof (1995), 2xLP, Reissue

One of the more unsung talents that came out of the Gang Starr Foundation was the Brooklyn-based duo Group Home, consisting of MCs Lil Dap and Melachi The Nutcracker. Dap was first showcased on the Gang Starr posse cut Im The Man, on 1992s Daily Operation; Melachi appeared on Words From The Nutcracker from 1993s Hard To Earn. The early Group Home song So Called Friends was also featured on 1993s now-legendary Gangstarr Foundation Sampler, which also gave the world Jerus Come Clean.

By 1995, Dap and Melachi had paid their dues and finally got their own full-length: Livin Proof. And it was everything that Gang Starr and any true school hip-hop fans could have wanted, produced almost entirely by DJ Premier (with two exceptions: Serious Rap Shit helmed by Guru himself; and 4 Give My Sins, produced by Jay-Z mentor Jaz-O (aka Big Jazz).

Beyond the albums classic singles – Supa Star, Livin Proof and Suspended In Time – there are Premier-overseen classics all over, including The Realness, Inna Citi Life, and Sacrifice. In fact, many Gang Starr scholars agree that the beats on Living Proof are in the Top 5 of all Premier-produced albums – no small boast, but certainly hard to disprove.
